MANY OF THE WORLD'S GREATEST RACING DRIVERS ASSEMBLED AT THE BRANDS HATCH CIRCUIT IN SOUTHERN ENGLAND TODAY (SATURDAY) FOR THE "RACE OF CHAMPIONS" -- THE FIRST IMPORTANT RACE OF THE EUROPEAN MOTOR RACING SEASON, ALTHOUGH THE RACE DOESN'T COUNT FOR THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP.

THE RACE IS RUN IN TWO 40-LAP HEATS AND THE WINNER SCORES ON THE BEST AGGREGATE TIME FOR THE TWO HEATS WHICH COVER A TOTAL DISTANCE OF 212 MILES (341 KILOMETRES).

IN PERFECT RACING ConditionS JIM CLARK, DRIVING A FORMULA ONE LOTUS, WON THE FIRST SECTION OF THE RACE AT A SPEED OF 99 MILES AN HOUR. CLARK, THE 1963 WORLD CHAMPION, YESTERDAY BECAME THE FIRST MAN TO LAP THE BRANDS HATCH CIRCUIT WITH AN AVERAGE SPEED OVER 100 MILES AN HOUR. DAN GURNEY OF THE UNITED STATES WAS SECOND IN THE FIRST SECTION AND MIKE SPENCE OF BRITAIN, IN A LOTUS, CAME THIRD.

EVERYONE EXPECTED CLARK TO WIN THE SECOND HEAT. HE HAD A 20 SECOND MARGIN AT THE START OF THE HEAT WITH DAN GURNEY AND MIKE SPENCE NEXT TO HIM ON THE STARTING GRID.

AT FIRST THE SECOND PART OF THE RACE LOOKED AS IF IT MIGHT TURN OUT THE SAME AS THE FIRST. CLARK TOOK THE LEAD IMMEDIATELY AND ON HIS FIRST LAP REACHED AN AVERAGE OF 100 MILES AN HOUR. DAN GURNEY CARVED HIS WAY THOUGH THE FIELD TO SIT ON CLARK'S TAIL BY THE TENTH LAP. BUT EVENTS WERE TO CHANGE RAPIDLY. FIRST CLARK'S CAR SPUN OFF THE TRACK AND CRASHED INTO A BANK. CLARK WAS SLIGHTLY HURT BUT ABLE TO HOBBLE AWAY FROM HIS WRECKED LOTUS. THIS LEFT GURNEY IN THE LEAD, BUT ONLY FOR TWO LAPS. HIS BRABHAM-COVENTRY CLIMAX DEVELOPED IGNITION TROUBLE AND HE HAD TO RETIRE. THEN IT WAS JACK BRABHAM'S TURN TO TAKE THE LEAD. THE FORMER WORLD CHAMPION HELD ON FOR A WHILE BUT THEN A LOOSE OIL PIPE FORCED HIM TOO TO PULL OUT.

MIKE SPENCE, THE LITTLE-KNOWN 28-YEAR-OLD DRIVER FOR LOTUS, WHO HAD COME THIRD IN THE FIRST HEAT, WENT ON TO WIN THE GBP1,000 FIRST PRIZE. CLARK WAS THERE TO CONGRATULATE HIM WHEN HE RECEIVED THE LAURELS.

STEWART, OF SCOTLAND WAS SECOND IN A B.R.M., AND BONNIER OF SWEDEN, IN A BRABHAM, CAME THIRD.
