    In Lebanon the rightwing Falangist radio reported on Wednesday (14 February) that Syrian troops serving with the Arab peace-keeping force had shelled the Christian residential districts in the southern suburbs of Beirut. Explosions were heard in various parts of the Lebanese capital and first reports spoke of seven wounded...two of them seriously.

    SYNOPSIS: Armed militiamen in the area have been ordered by their leaders to exercise self-restraint the abide by a U.N. Security Council ceasefire call made last October. But sporadic firing continued and militiamen remain alert.

    The Lebanese flag continues to fly from buildings. A rightwing spokesman said the Syrians have been using heavy tanks, mortars and machineguns. The Falangists also claim that the latest attack was designed to embarrass the Lebanese authorities following a visit to Damascus on Tuesday (13 February, 1979) by Lebanon's Defence Minister, Victor Khoury.

    The talks in Syria dealt with the deployment of Lebanese troops in the southern region of the country. But while the talking continued the firing broke out with both Moslem and Christian factions the cease-fire.
