    Background: TOKYO, JAPAN

A massive collection of over 20,000 toys from ten countries were on display at the 1984 Tokyo Toy Show, when it opened on June 1. Besides 134 Japanese firms, companies from Australia, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Europe have been showing their products to international buyers. Among the most popular exhibits was a display of highly active robots, an example of the growing market in high technology. Robots appear to be the toy fashion this year with many different varieties on display. The more hideous they look the more popular they are, and if the robot can perform somersaults as well then it must be a winner. But video games are still a high priority for buyers. Also on display were the more traditional toys, furry animals now updated with their own built-in electronics, and able to rock themselves in a lifelike manner guaranteed to charm children, and maybe a few adults as well. On the larger scale you can buy a whole town - complete with all modern amenities. More than 100,000 people were expected to visit the show before it closed on June 3.
