  • Description

From dawn this morning (Thursday, 13 June), a huge security operation swung into action in Frankfurt to protect the opening World Cup match from the threat of guerrilla attacks.

At first light, more than 2,000 police threw a security cordon around the Waldstadium, where holders Brazil were to play Yugoslavia in the first match of the tournament. Police with dogs scoured surrounding woodland, fearing a possible rocket attack against the stadium.

Fire engines with water cannon and armoured vehicles converged on the stadium, while overhead police helicopters patrolled the main approaches. As the 60,000 spectators started to arrive, they were searched by securitymen,
And as the opening match progressed without interruption, there was news that the West German police had broken up a group of Palestinian extremists who were planning attacks during the championship. Five people, two of them Arabs, were arrested, and two other Arabs were deported.
