  • Description

THE FRENCH GOVERNMENT TODAY (THURSDAY) ANNOUNCED CONTROLS ON THE EXPORT OF ALL DAIRY PRODUCTS FROM FRANCE IN AN EFFORT TO CONSERVE STOCK IN THE FACE OF THE CONTINUING STOPPAGE OF MILK DELIVERIES.

THE FARMERS' MILK STRIKE, WHICH STARTED LAST FRIDAY, HAS DEPRIVED FRANCE OF NEARLY HALF ITS NORMAL SUPPLY OF FRESH MILK. PARIS IS NOW WITHOUT FRESH MILK AND THE STRIKE IS SPREADING TO EVERY LARGE CITY.

THE GOVERNMENT HAS PLACED 5,000 TONS OF IMPORTED POWDERED MILK IN THE MARKET, AND IS TO RELEASE 15,000 TONS OF BUTTER FROM, ITS STOCKS. M. PISANI, MINISTER OF AGRICULTURE, HAS SAID THAT THE GOVERNMENT WOULD NOT MEET THE DAIRYMEN'S DEMANDS FOR AN INCREASE IN THE WHOLESALE PRICE OF MILK.

BESIDES IMPOSING CONTROLS ON THE EXPORTS OF DAIRY PRODUCTS, FRANCE HAS ENDED RESTRICTIONS AND CUSTOMS DUTIES ON THE IMPORTS OF FRESH MILK PRODUCTS.....

THE GOVERNMENT IS REMAINING FIRM IN ITS POLICY OF PRICE STABILISATION, ALTHOUGH THE ORGANISERS OF THE STRIKE HAVE WARNED THAT THE STOPPAGE COULD CONTINUE FOR TWO MONTHS.

IN PARIS QUEUES FOR SPECIAL MILK SUPPLIES HAVE BEEN FORMING AT CHEMISTS; AND MANY PEOPLE HAVE BEEN DRIVING OUT INTO THE COUNTRYSIDE TO ONE FARM, AT LA VARENNE-ST-HILAIRE, WHERE THE FARMER HAS REFUSED TO FOLLOW THE STRIKE ORDER. LONG QUEUE WAIT EACH MORNING AND EVENING FOR A CHANCE TO BUY A SMALL "RATION".
