  • Description

Pope Paul and non-Roman Catholics yesterday (Saturday) took part in a service for Christian unity.

The service was held in the basilica of St. Paul's Outside the Walls, where the late Pope John Paul first announced the holding of the historic Ecumenical Council. Bishops attending the Council, which ends on Wednesday after four years of debate, were among the congregation. The 60 non-Catholics who took part are those attending the Council as observers. The service, which included hymns and psalms, was one of common prayer.

(Pope Paul closes the Ecumenical Council on Wednesday at an open-air ceremony in St. Peter's Square.)
