    AMERICA'S LARGEST HELICOPTER, THE SIKORSKY CH-53A, HAS COMPLETED ITS FIRST FLIGHT AT THE MANUFACTURER'S PLANT IN STRATFORD, CONNECTICUT. THE HELICOPTER HAS BEEN BUILT FOR THE U.S. MARINE CORPS AS AN ASSAULT TRANSPORT. MILITARY EXPERTS AND PRESSMEN SAW THE FIRST FLIGHT.

    THE AIRCRAFT CAN CARRY 38 TROOPS, OR 24 STRETCHER PATIENTS, OR 8,000 POUNDS OF CARGO. IT IS EQUIPPED WITH TWIN-TURBINE ENGINES GIVING A CRUISING SPEED OF 172 MILES-AN -HOUR, AND A TOP SPEED OF 200 MILES-AN-HOUR.

    ITS PRIMARY FUNCTION WILL BE TO ASSIST AMPHIBIOUS ASSAULT - TRANSPORTING MARINES AND EQUIPMENT BETWEEN AIRCRAFT CARRIES AND INLAND BATTLE AREAS. SPECIAL FEATURES ARE A WATER-TIGHT HULL AND SPONSONS WHICH WOULD KEEP THE GIANT HELICOPTER AFLOAT IN THE EVENT OF AN EMERGENCY LANDING OVER THE SEA.

    IT IS EXPECTED THAT THE FIRST DELIVERIES OF THE AIRCRAFT WILL TAKE PLACE IN 1966.
