  • Description

Rhodesian "all-in wrestling" fans had their fill of excitement during two bouts at Lusaka Arena recently.

First bout between Piet van der Merwe and Vic Smythe set the tempo of the evening's 'entertainment'. After being pinned to canvas with a leg-lock around his neck, Vic Smythe arose and promptly threw van der Merwe all around the ring.

His anger roused, Smythe cornered van der Merwe and pummelled him about the body. The referee intervenes and remonstrates with Smythe, who ignores him and once again dumps van der Merwe on his rump. Smythe was the eventual winner.

This was really the referee's night. In the next bout he disqualified Fred Coates for "fouling" Willie Kohne during a "see-saw" hold. Obviously not in accord with the ref's decision, Fred promptly pounced on him and proceeded to demonstrate. Not satisfied with this, Fred then turned on Kohne.

While spectators cheered this "unexpected" turn of events, both sets of handlers, not able to sit and watch, entered the ring.. and the affray.

Unanimous decision of the audience was that this was the best bout of the evening.
