Background: In Rome, Apr 24, drivers from all over Europe went through the initial and final phases of the European Capitals Rally, organised by the rome Automobile Club in conjunction with Shell Italian and European motoring associations.

Competitors, setting out from the different capitals between Apr 8 and 20, had to reach Rome on Apr 23, by any route they chose. Rome starters did a "token run" to Bari and back.

The following day, competitors left Rome on a 265-tour through Central Italy, returning to the capital via Viterbo, Orvieto, Perugia, Assisi, Spoleto and Terni. Complementary trials were held on route: a regulated speed test at Vallelunga autodrome, an accuracy test at Bagnoregio, and an acceleration test at Perugia airport.

Having completed the circular tour, drivers had to pass a final ability test, negotiating their cars over a difficult obstacle course.

There were 35 cash prizes in the general classification, and others for the two most successful competitors of every participating nation, Italy excluded. Total prize money amounted to five million Lire. Winners are expected to be announced on Apr 26.
