  • Description

WHILE TENSION ON CYPRUS AGAIN RISES, EFFORTS BY THE UNITED NATIONS TO STRENGTHEN THE PEACE KEEPING FORCE ARE CONTINUING. THE UNITED NATIONS SECRETARY GENERAL U THANT, HAS ASKED DENMARK TO SUPPLY ONE THOUSAND TROOPS FOR THE U.N. COMMAND - A REQUEST WHICH IS BEING CONSIDERED BY THE DANISH GOVERNMENT.

THE BID TO SET UP AN EFFECTIVE UNITED NATIONS FORCE IN BOTH THE MILITARY AND CIVIL SPHERES IS MEETING WITH MIXED SUCCESS. BRITAIN HAS REJECTED A PLEA FOR FORTY CIVILIAN POLICE TO JOIN THE PEACE FORCE, ALTHOUGH AUSTRIA HAS AGREED TO SEND A MILITARY MEDICAL TEAM TO THE ISLAND.

THE CYPRUS CONFLICT, WHICH IS NOW IN ITS FOURTH MONTH, HAS RESULTED IN A BREAKDOWN IN MANY OF THE ISLAND'S SOCIAL SERVICES. EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATIONS BETWEEN GREEK AND TURKISH CONTROLLED AREAS HAVE BEEN AT A PREMIUM AND TO COUNTER GREEK CYPRIOT DOMINATION OF SOME SERVICES THE TURKISH CYPRIOTS HAVE SET UP THEIR OWN POSTAL, TELECOMMUNICATIONS AND POLICE SERVICES.

THE ALMOST UNCEASING CONFLICT HAS TAXED THE ISLAND'S MEDICAL SERVICES TO THE LIMIT. APART FROM THOSE WOUNDED IN THE ACTUAL FIGHTING, THE NUMBER OF REFUGEES WHO HAVE FLED THE COMBAT AREAS HAVE CREATED PROBLEMS IN PUBLIC HEALTH WHICH ARE REACHING SERIOUS PROPORTIONS.

RED CROSS TEAMS SENT TO CYPRUS HAVE ATTEMPTED TO COPE WITH THE SITUATION, BUT THERE HAS BEEN A DIRE LACK OF TRAINED PERSONNEL. THE RESPONSE BY THE AUSTRIANS IS EXPECTED TO HELP OVERCOME THE SHORTAGE OF DOCTORS AND NURSES ON THE ISLAND.

INCLUDED IN THE TEAM ARE THREE DOCTORS, TRAINED THEATRE AND WARD NURSES AS WELL AS MEDICAL ORDERLIES.

THE ARRIVAL OF THE MEDICAL TEAM DURING THIS WEEKEND WILL FILL A VOID IN THE MAKE-UP OF THE UNITED NATIONS' ORGANISATION ON CYPRUS - A COMPOSITE EFFORT WHICH IS NOT ONLY TRYING TO BRING ABOUT THE PEACE BUT IS ATTEMPTING TO HEAL THE WOUNDS CAUSED BY THE LONG-STANDING INTER-COMMUNAL DIFFERENCES.
