  • Description

The leaders of the Military Government in Chile have started appearing at public functions. Various senior officials appeared at two events late last week (December 20 & 21) in and near Santiago.

The first occasion was a further step towards erasing the personality cult surrounding the late President Salvador Allende. The country house of the late President, who lost his life in the coup that overthrew his government on September 9th, has been turned into a centre for homeless children. The house is located on an estate in the El Arrayan district about 30 kilometres (18 1/2 miles) from Santiago, the capital of Chile. When he officially opened the Home, formerly called 'El Canaveral' - the Cane Field, the Chilean Minister of Justice Gonzalo Prieto Gandara alleged that the house had formerly been used to store arms and train guerrillas.

A day later (December 21) four senior members of the military cabinet officiated at a ceremony to honour Chile's brightest graduating students. Three thousand students attended the ceremony in the Plenary Session Hall of the Diego Portales Government building in Santiago. The diplomas and prizes, named in honour of Manuel Montt, a former president of Chile, were awarded by General Gustavo Leigh, Commander in Chief of the Air Force; General Cesar Mendoza, the Director General of the Militia; Rear Admiral Hugo Castro, the Minister of Education; and Colonel Pedro Ewing, the Secretary of Government.

General Leigh told the students that the new regime promised "sacrifices not flattery, authority not disorder, and a profoundly nationalistic government". He also described the coup as the gravest defeat suffered by international Communism.
