  • Description

The President of the Seychelles, a socialist republic in the Indian Ocean, has concluded a day of talks in Peking with Chinese leaders, including Chairman Hua Kuo-feng. The talks took place on May Day (Monday, 1 May).

SYNOPSIS: Chairman Hua told President France Albert Rene that China appreciated the Seychelles' efforts to cement the unity of Africa, and of the insular states of the southwest Indian Ocean. He said China was firmly behind the Seychelles' proposal to turn the Indian Ocean into a zone of peace. President Rene replied that Seychelles, being a small nation, would not find it easy to make her policies felt in the Indian Ocean. He said his country's weapons were determination and sincerity. Later, an agreement on economic and technical co-operation was signed between the two governments. After meeting Chairman Hua, and having a round of discussions in Peking, President Rene moved on to Shanghai, where he visited a shipyard, a school and a rural commune.
