Background: President Abdul Salam Mohammed Arif of Iraq arrived in New Delhi, India yesterday (Thursday), for a seven day state visit.

He arrived in a Pakistan Airforce "Viscount" and was met the President Radhakrishnan. Also present in the welcoming party were several Government ministers and members of the diplomatic corps. Later President Arif went to Rajghat to lay a wreath at the tomb of Mahatma Gandhi.

In his welcoming address, Dr. Radhakrishnan referred to the age-old friendly relations between India and Iraq, and was gratified at President Arif's declaration at the Arab States' Summit Conference in Cairo earlier this year, that Iraq would not resort to force in settling problems. In his reply, President Arif hoped the visit would further strengthen relations between the two countries.

President Arif is due to have talks with Prime Minister Nehru on Saturday before leaving on a nation-wide tour. During the past week he has been visiting Pakistan where he had talks with President Ayub Khan.
