  • Description

In Lebanon, an army contingent deployed in Beirut port area was reinforced on Wednesday (15 August) by about three hundred troops. The reinforcement followed fighting over the past few days between the troops and right wing militiamen which led to the closure of the port. And in the southern port city of Tyre, an International Red Cross Centre was cleaning up after being hit by shellfire during a bombardment by Israeli and right-wing militia gunners.

SYNOPSIS: The port in beirut is near one of the city's main combat areas. And this week the battles have spilled into the port area forcing the closure of crucial industry and commerce near the harbour.

Pressure from industrialists and businessmen hastened the deployment of the army so that the port could begin to function normally again. Official sources said the additional force was expected to be increased to six hundred men on Thursday (16 August). Prime Minister Selim Hoss, said he deplored the clashes in the port area and said those who attacked the Lebanese Army were acting against legality.

And in Southern Lebanon, the International Red Cross Centre at Tyre reported that two big shells exploded in the courtyard of he beach-front centre of the outskirts of town. The centre, which is clearly marked with huge signs and flags, lies close to Palestinian refugee camps which have been pounded repeatedly by Israeli-rightist artillery.
