  • Description

THE URUGUAYAN GOVERNMENT HAS CALLED IN TROOPS TO DAIRY FARMS AROUND MONTEVIDEO TO COUNTER A MILK DELIVERY STRIKE BY FARMERS FOR HIGHER PRICES. THE STRIKE STARTED ON 20 FEBRUARY.

THE AIR FORCE HAS ALSO BEEN MOBILIZED TO BRING DRIED MILK FROM BRAZIL. THE PROBLEM HAS BECOME A PRESSING ONE, WITH URUGUAY'S CURRENCY-EARNING TOURIST SEASON NOW AT ITS HEIGHT. AT LEAST ONE RESORT HAS ALREADY HAD TO GO WITHOUT MILK FOR A FULL 24 HOURS.

TROOPS ARE BEING USED TO COLLECT MILK FROM FARMS IN THE MONTEVIDEO AREA AND AROUND CANELONES -- THE MOST IMPORTANT OF THE DAIRY-PRODUCING AREAS. THE SOLDIERS HAVE SET UP THEIR HEADQUARTERS IN THE CITY OF CANELONES.

IN MONTEVIDEO, WHERE THERE IS A PASTURING PLANT, SUPPLIES OF MILK HAVE BEEN CUT TO LESS THAN A QUARTER.

URUGUAY PRESIDENT PACHECO ARECO, WHEN HE ORDERED IN THE TROOPS, FIXED A 50 PER CENT PROVISIONAL INCREASE ON THE PRICE OF MILK AND OR ORDERED DAIRY FARMERS TO HAND OVER THEIR MILK TO THE MILITARY.
