Background: General Franco of Spain joined members of the Fascist Falange movement on Tuesday (November 20th) to commemorate the death of their founder, Jose Antonio Prime de Rivera, with a wreath laying ceremony at the Valley of the Fallen near Madrid.

Falange youths and veteran supporters from the Spanish Civil War gathered at a Basilica in the Valley to welcome the Spanish leader.

Spain's Falangists are this year celebrating their fortieth anniversary. They fought with the Traditionalists in the Civil War, overthrowing the Republican government. In 1937 the Falangists and Traditionalists were fused into a single party, and all other parties were dissolved.

Since then, the Falangist's power has declined with General Franco's stipulation that all permissible political groups must be part of Spain's nationalist movement. Despite this, the Falangists still retain the trappings of their past, including the fascist salute.

SYNOPSIS: General Franco assumed the leadership of Nationalist Spain in 1936 and he headed the Falangist party in the new government.

After the service, the Falangists sang their battle hymn of the Civil War.

    "Cara al Sol".

Despite General Franco's stipulation that all permissible political groups must be part of Spain's nationalist movement, the Falangists still retain a separate identity.
