  • Description

AN INVASION BY MORE THAN 5,000 PLEASURE CRAFT CAUSED NEAR-CHAOS AT THE START IN GOTHENBURG HARBOUR, SWEDEN, YESTERDAY (SATURDAY) OF THE 1968 TALL SHIPS RACE TO KRISTIANSAND IN NORWAY. THE NINE COMPETITORS -- THREE WINDJAMMERS AND SIX SCHOONERS -- WERE HEMMED IN BY THE ARMADA OF BOATS ALL THE WAY TO THE STARTING LINE 12 MILES (19KMS) AWAY.

AS POLICE LAUNCHES TRIED TO BRING ORDER TO THE SCENE, THE WINDJAMMERS WERE FIRST AWAY -- AND IT PROVED A DISASTROUS START FOR THE 1,753-TON WEST GERMAN FULL-RIGGER, "GORCH FOCK", WHICH CROSSED THE LINE TOO EARLY AND HAD TO CIRCLE BACK. BY THE TIME IT RE-STARTED, THE SMALLER NORWEGIAN WINDJAMMERS, "CHRISTIAN RADICH" (773 TONS) AND "SOERLANDET" (644 TONS) HAD STOLEN A KILOMETRES LEAD IN THE 750 MILE (1,207 KM) RACE.

IN THE SCHOONER CLASS, ALL SIX SHIPS WENT OVER THE LINE ALMOST SIMULTANEOUSLY, BUT WITHIN HALF AN HOUR THE SWEDISH NAVAL TRAINING SHIP, "GLADAN", HAD DRAWN AWAY AND CAUGHT UP WITH THE "GORCH FOCK". THE BRITISH TWIN SCHOONERS, "SIR WINSTON CHURCHILL" AND "MALCOLM MILLER" -- 80TH CREWED BY SCHOOLBOYS AND RACING AGAINST EACH OTHER FOR THE FIRST TIME -- WERE SECOND AND THIRD RESPECTIVELY. IN SPITE OF THEIR EXPERIENCED CREWS.
