    Experts on the protection of cultural properties from 12 Asian countries started a week-long meeting today (Tuesday) in Tokyo in a friendly atmosphere.

    The meeting is jointly sponsored by the Japanese National Commission for Unesco and the Asian Cultural Centre, A Unesco-Affiliated private organization in Tokyo.

    The participants from Afghanistan, Ceylon, India, Indonesia, Japan, Khmer Republic, The Republic of Korea, Malaysia, Nepal, The Philippines, Thailand and The Republic of Vietnam are one expert who is in charge of management concerning protection of cultural property of each countries.

    During the meeting, the experts will discuss the present condition of preparations for the science and protective inventories of cultural properties in Asian countries. And they will also study the concept and the criteria of the protective inventory of cultural properties applicable commonly in the Asian region, thereby contributing to the promotion of aims embodied in the Unesco Recommendations, i.e. "Recommendation Private Works" (1968) and "Recommendation concerning the Protection, at the National Level, of Monuments, Group of Buildings and Sites" (expected to be adopted by the General Conference in 1972).

    The study by observation in Kyoto and Nara -- both were traditional capitals before the Edo Era had been established in Tokyo -- is scheduled from 11th of March.
