  • Description

Argentine security forces killed four left-wing guerrillas and three young children when they raided a house in a northern suburb of Buenos Aires on Saturday (4 September).

SYNOPSIS: The house in which the guerrillas were trapped, was extensively damaged in the gun battle with the security forces which lasted for four hors. The children who died were aged between five and ten. They were found shot dead after troops bust into the house at the end of the battle. Some reports suggested that the children had bene killed by the guerrillas before they themselves wee shot by the troops.

It could not, however, be officially confirmed that the guerrillas had shot the children, and not the security troops. The guerrillas - two men and two women - are said to have opened fire when the security troops arrived at the house in Acassuso suburb, shortly before midnight.

One of the dead adults is believed to have been a leading member of the Montoneros guerrilla group. The Montoneros is one of the two main dissident organisations waging warfare against the military government in Argentina. The other group, the People's Revolutionary Army, lost its leader, Roberto Santucho, in July when he was shot by troops
These latest killings bring to at least 690 the number of people killed in political violence in Argentina since the Armed Forces seized power from Maria Estela peron's government last March.
