Background: TODAY (THURSDAY) THE RHODESIAN GOVERNMENT EXTENDED THE STATE OF EMERGENCY FOR ANOTHER THREE MONTHS. THE MINISTER OF JUSTICE, MR LARDNER-BURKE, SAID THAT VIGILANCE AGAINST TERRORISTS MUST NOT BE RELAXED. THE ANNOUNCEMENT CAME ON THE SECOND DAY OF THE NEW PARLIAMENTARY SESSION.

THE REBEL RHODESIAN PARLIAMENT REASSEMBLED YESTERDAY. AFTER A BREAK OF TWO MONTHS, RHODESIAN MEMBERS OF PARLIAMENT WILL BE LOOKING TO MR SMITH IN THE COMING WEEKS FOR A MAJOR POLICY SPEECH. IT IS THOUGHT THAT DURING THE PARLIAMENT TERM MEASURES MAY BE INTRODUCED TO CHANGE RHODESIA INTO A REPUBLIC - ALTHOUGH BRITAIN WOULD NOT RECOGNISE SUCH A MOVE. MR SMITH'S RHODESIAN FRONT PARTY HOLD 49 SEATS IN THE 65 SEAT HOUSE. FIVE SEATS ARE HELD BY INDEPENDENTS, THERE IS ONE BY-ELECTION PENDING, AND THE MAIN OPPOSITION IS THE TEN SEAT UNITED PEOPLE'S PARTY WHICH ENTERS THIS PARLIAMENTARY TERM UNDER THE NEW LEADERSHIP OF MR PERCY MKUDU.

MR MKUDU WAS ELECTED LEADER OF THE UNITED PEOPLE'S PARTY ON SATURDAY IN SUCCESSION TO MR JOSIAH GONDO. RHODESIAN-BORN MR MKUDU ATTENDED SCHOOL IN JOHANNESBURG WHERE HE OBTAINED A DIPLOMA IN SOCIAL SCIENCE. RETURNING TO RHODESIA IN 1959 HE WORKED AS A WELFARE OFFICER BEFORE ELECTED TO THE LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY IN 1962.

MR MKUDU WAS INTERVIEWED IN GWELO IMMEDIATELY AFTER HIS ELECTION AS LEADER.....
