Background: Despite injury to their top-scoring opener Aftab, Pakistan's cricketers recovered superbly in their first Test Match with England yesterday (Thursday). In a lively first over at Edgbaston, England fast bowler Ward caused his third ball to rear up striking Aftab on the head.
While Aftab retired for hospital treatment, Pakistan settled down to build the foundation of a really big innings. Zahir was hero of the day with an undefeated 159. By close of play, Pakistan had scored 270 for the loss of only one wicket.
Meanwhile, there was drama of a different kind outside the ground as 200 supporters of the so-called Bangla Desh movement staged a demonstration. Some started a hunger strike, others waved and chanted against the Pakistani authorities.
