  • Description

GREEKS THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY TODAY (TUESDAY) UPHELD THE TRADITION OF CELEBRATING THE NAME DAY OF KING CONSTANTINE, EVEN THOUGH THE 27-YEAR-OLD MONARCH IS NOW IN SELF-IMPOSED EXILE IN ROME.

SCHOOLS, BANKS AND GOVERNMENT OFFICES REMAINED CLOSED AND THE BLUE AND WHITE FLAG OF GREECE FLUTTERED FROM PUBLIC BUILDINGS AS THE REGENT, LIEUTENANT-GENERAL GEORGE ZOITAKIS WITH MEMBERS OF THE ARMY-BACKED GOVERNMENT ATTENDED A SERVICE IN ATHENS CATHEDRAL.

GREEKS TRADITIONALLY CELEBRATE THE DAY RESERVED IN THE RELIGIOUS CALENDAR FOR THE SAINT AFTER WHO THEY ARE NAMED. THEY TREAT IT AS THOUGH IT WERE THEIR OWN BIRTHDAY AND RECEIVE CONGRATULATIONS AND GIFTS.

THE GOVERNMENT OF PRIME MINISTER GEORGE PAPADOLOULOS HAS MADE IT CLEAR THAT DESPITE THE ABSENCE OF THE KING THIS YEAR, AFTER HIS ABORTIVE ATTEMPT TO TOPPLE THE REGIME LAST DECEMBER, THERE IS TO BE NO DEPARTURE FROM NORMAL CEREMONIALS.

AS OFFICIALS ARRIVED AT THE CATHEDRAL TODAY A GROUP OF ABOUT 50 ATHENIANS CHANTED PRO-ROYALIST SLOGANS IN THE FIRST PUBLIC DEMONSTRATION IN SUPPORT OF THE KING SINCE HE WENT INTO EXILE. POLICE MOVED IN TO DEAL WITH THE INCIDENT BY THERE WERE NO ARRESTS.
