  • Description

The 52nd convention of Rotary International, which opened in Tokyo at the Harumi Convention Hall on May 29, was the biggest ever held in the history of Rotary movement. Nearly 23,000 Rotarians and their families from 70 countries participated in the convention.

The occasion was also the first time that the Emperor of Japan addressed a non-Governmental organization. The Empress was also present on the stage as the Emperor called upon the Rotarians to "constantly do the utmost to promote international cooperation to help bring peace which all the world so eagerly desires to have."
Among the prominent Rotarians at the meeting were Mr.J. Ed. McLaughlin. Rotary International President and Mr. Ernst G. Breitholiz, First Vice-President of Rotary.

While the function was being held in the main hall, Eidophor Equipment televised the proceedings on a theatre-size screen in the adjoining hall for those who could not be accommodated in the main hall. The Eidophor system utilises a TV camera to project a picture.

Rotarians and their families were later entertained to a Fashion Show and Japanese Dances.
