  • Description

Four more victims of the Italian cholera outbreak died on Tuesday (September 4) as the disease spread to the south-east port of Bari, bringing the total number of dead to 18.

Environmentalists and medical officials were particularly alarmed at the new cases in the Bari region, as this indicates that the Adriatic coastline of Italy may have similar - even worse contamination problems than the country's Western Mediterranean aspect.

The Bari victims were all male, and elderly. At least one is believed to have eaten local seafood; doctors are convinced that contaminated seafood are mainly responsible for the Cholera deaths so far in Naples, Rome and other Italian cities.

In an emergency move to stop further outbreaks, Bari officials have closed schools, churches, cinemas and all other public meeting places.

Police are preventing cars from entering the grounds of the hospital where Cholera victims are being treated, and ambulances are being thoroughly disinfected after bringing in Cholera suspects.
