  • Description

In Khartoum, Sudan, on tuesday (25 May), 100,000 people attended celebrations to mark the anniversary of the 1969 revolution, which brought their present leader, President Jaafar al-Nimeiry to power.

This year several countries were strongly represented. China's Minister for Economic Relations with Foreign Countries, Mr. Fang 71 and a large number of Chinese officials attended, along with an army platoon of Saudi Arabian paratroopers.

It was seven years ago that President Nimeiry, then an army colonel, led a group of officers and civilians which overthrew the Mahgoub Government. All existing political institutions and organisations were abolished and the Democratic Republic of the Sudan was established.

More recently the People's Republic of China has taken a close interest in Sudan's development. Last week a cultural centre, built with a GBP 3,000,000 sterling (5,400,000 U.S. dollars) loan from China was officially opened in Khartoum.

Anniversary Day itself was marked by a colourful parade of troops through the capital. Later children gave a display of dancing.
