    A PARTY OF 120 SURVEYORS FROM THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA ARRIVED IN DAR ES SALAAM BY SEA ON FRIDAY (12 APRIL) TO BEGIN DESIGNING AND PLANNING THE 1,060 MILE (1,969 KM) RAILWAY LINK BETWEEN TANZANIA AND ZAMBIA. THE SURVEY IS EXPECTED TO BE COMPLETED IN TIME FOR CONSTRUCTION WORK TO BEGIN IN 1970.

    THE TANZANIAN COMMUNICATIONS MINISTER MR. JOB LUSINDE WENT ON BOARD THE CHINESE VESSEL YOA HUA AFTER IT HAD BEEN BERTHED TO MEET THE LEADERS OF THE PARTY.

    LATER HE SAID THAT OVER ONE HUNDRED MORE SURVEYORS WERE EXPECTED TO JOIN THE OTHERS BEFORE THE SURVEY IS COMPLETED.

    ALSO ON BOARD THE SHIP WAS A PARTY OF CHINESE DOCTORS AND NURSES COMING TO WORK IN RURAL AREAS OF TANZANIA.

    ZAMBIA'S MAIN LINK WITH THE SEA HA SO FAR BEEN THE LINE THROUGH RHODESIA AND PORTUGUESE MOZAMBIQUE BUT SINCE RHODESIA'S UNILATERAL DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE, ZAMBIA HAS TRIED TO END HER DEPENDENCE ON THIS LINE.
