  • Description

MOUNT ETNA - EUROPE'S HIGHEST VOLCANO - IS ACTIVE AGAIN. IT STARTED ERUPTING ON 10TH MAY, AND SINCE THEN A NEW FLOW OF LAVA HAS POURED DOWN THE MOUNTAIN'S SOUTHERN SLOPES, LIGHTING UP THE SICILIAN SKY AT NIGHT. EXPLOSIONS IN THE CENTRAL CRATER HAVE HURLED VOLCANIC DUST HIGH IN THE AIR. SO FAR THERE IS NO DANGER TO BUILDINGS IN THE AREA - IN FACT THE NEW ERUPTION HAS ATTRACTED THOUSANDS OF TOURISTS TO WATCH THE LAVA FLOW SNAKING ITS WAY DOWN THE SLOPES AT ABOUT 2 KILOMETRES AN HOUR.

THE FLOW IS ESTIMATED TO BE 6 KILOMETRES (3.7 MILES) LONG AND ABOUT 100 METRES (109 YARDS) WIDE. A SPOKESMAN FROM THE NEARBY VOLCANO OBSERVATORY, SAID THAT THERE ARE MANY NATURAL OBSTACLES IN THE PATH OF THE FLOW WHICH ARE HELPING TO SLOW DOWN ITS PROGRESS. THIS LATEST ERUPTION IS THOUGHT TO BE COMING FROM A 50-METRE (54 YARDS) WIDE FISSURE JUST BELOW THE CENTRAL CRATER.
