  • Description

Tanzanian President Julius Nyerere addressed the National Assembly in Dar es Salaam yesterday (July 6) but gave no date for the promised general elections as had been expected. However, he said Presidential and Parliamentary elections would be held within the next few months.

Addressing the Assembly, President Nyerere emphasised the importance of the union between mainland Tanganyika and Zanzibar, which occurred shortly after the 1964 revolution that deposed the Arab Sultan of Zanzibar. He said it was the most misunderstood aspect of Tanzania's political development. It is the only union on the continent of Africa between the two sovereign states.

Speaking on the forthcoming elections President Nyerere said "they introduce an element of uncertainty into the life of every leader, but they are essential to this nation, and indeed to every leader who accepts his role as servant of the people."
The President said he was unable to see what could be put in the place of periodic elections, through which members of Parliament could know whether they enjoyed the confidences of the people.
