AT THE PARADE, WHICH MARKED GENERAL GOWON'S 35TH BIRTHDAY, THE NIGERIAN LEADER ALSO SAID THAT HE FELT THAT THE END OF THE COUNTRY'S CIVIL WAR IS NOW IN SIGHT.

    ADDRESSING MEMBERS OF THE FEDERAL GUARD AT THE PARADE, GENERAL GOWON SAID THAT BY THE TIME HE HAD REACHED HIS 36TH BIRTHDAY, HE HOPED THAT THE 28-MONTH-OLD CIVIL WAR WOULD HAVE ENDED AND THE COUNTRY WOULD BE CELEBRATING A RETURN TO PEACE.

    THE NIGERIAN LEADER WENT ON TO EXPRESS HIS CONFIDENCE IN THE ABILITY OF THE FEDERAL ARMED FORCES TO END THE BIAFRAN "RELELLION", THUS BRINGING UNITY AND SOLIDARITY TO THE COUNTRY.

    HE CRITICIZED THE CYNICS AND ENEMIES OF NIGERIA WHO HAD EXPRESSED PESSIMISM ABOUT THE ABILITY OF FEDERAL TROOPS TO CRUSH THE SECESSION MOVEMENT LED BY MAJOR-GENERAL ODUMEGWU OJUKWU.

    AND HE HAD THE HIGHEST OF PRAISE FOR SOLDIERS OF THE FEDERAL GUARD:
    BRITAIN'S QUEEN ELIZABETH AND SOVIET PRIME MINISTER ALEXEI KOSYGIN WERE AMONG THOSE WHO SENT GENERAL GOWON CONGRATULATORY MESSAGES ON HIS BIRTHDAY.
