  • Description

AT THE TINY VILLAGE OF ROCHEFORT EN YVELINE, NEAR RAMBOUILLET, JUNE 20, JOURNALISTS WERE INTRODUCED TO THE R8, AN ENTIRELY NEW FOUR-TO-FIVE-SEAT FAMILY CAR FROM THE STATE-OWNED RENAULT COMPANY.

DESIGNED WITH AN EYE ON MOTORING DEMANDS IN THE COMMON MARKET, THE SQUARE-LINED, SPACIOUS R8 INCORPORATES THE LATEST TECHNICAL ADVANCES ALREADY BEEN IN THE RENAULT 'FLORIDES', BUT IN THE SHAPE OF A REAR-ENGINED COMPACT FAMILY SALOON THAT IS ROBUST, YET ECONOMICAL TO RUN AND MAINTAIN.

THE RENAULT'S CRUISING SPEED OF UP TO 80 MPH IS MATCHED WITH LOCKHEED HYDRAULICALLY OPERATED DISC BRAKES ON ALL FOUR WHEEL. AS WITH THE 'FLORIDES' AND THE RENAULT R4, ITS ENGINE IS COOLED BY A SEALED WATER AND GLYCOL SYSTEM THAT CANNOT FREEZE AND NEVER REQUIRES TOPPING UP.

A FOUR-CYLINDER-IN-LINE ENGINE OF 956 CC IS REAR-MOUNTED, WITH DRIVE DIRECT TO BACK WHEELS THROUGH A FOUR-SPEED GEARBOX. THE ENGINE HAS A FIVE-BEARING CRANKSHAFT MAKING POSSIBLE A HIGH RATE OF REVOLUTIONS WITHOUT VIBRATION. THE BORE IS GREATER THAN THE STROKE, SO THAT PISTON SPEED IS LOW FOR ANY GIVEN ENGINE REVOLUTION SPEED, A FACTOR WHICH MEANS A LONGER LIFE FOR PISTONS AND CYLINDER WALLS. THE ENGINE HAS 8.5 TO ONE COMPRESSION RATIO AND DEVELOPS 48 BHP AT 5,200 RPM.

THE GEARBOX HAS SYNCROMESH ON THE UPPER THREE RATIOS. THE ALL-ROUND INDEPENDENT SUSPENSION USES COIL SPRINGS AND RUBBER ELEMENTS AND A FRONT ANTI-ROLL BAR TO GIVE STEADY CONCERNING. OTHER FEATURES INCLUDE A FRESH AIR HEATING AND VENTILATION SYSTEM, SAFETY PADDING, DEEPLY DISHED STEERING WHEEL, CHILD-PROOF SAFETY LOCKS, AN ANTI-THEFT STEERING LOCK, AND BOLT-ON WING PANELS FOR EASY REPLACEMENT.

WITH THE GROWING DEMAND FOR COMPACTNESS IN OVERCROWDED EUROPEAN CITIES, RENAULT DESIGNERS HAVE KEPT THE OVERALL LENGTH OF THE R8 TO 13 FEET, 1 INCH, AND WIDTH TO 4 FEET, 10 1/2 INCHES. THE CAR HAS A TURNING CIRCLE OF 30 FEET.

PETROL CONSUMPTION, WITH THE CAR DRIVEN VERY HARD UNDER ALL KINDS OF ROAD CONDITIONS, WAS SAID TO BE IN THE REGION OF 36 MILES PER GALLON. THE PRICE IS EXPECTED TO FIT BETWEEN THAT OF THE 'DAUPHINE AND THE 'FLORIDE'.
