Background: Victory seems assured for General Juan Peron in the presidential election in Argentina on Sunday (23rd September) - the second election held this year. The only question is whether he will win an outright victory. Reports say General Peron is hoping for at least 60 per cent of the vote, when 14 million Argentineans go to the polls.

Three other candidates will contest the election. General Peron's main opponent is Senor Ricardo Balbin - the leader of the Radical Party. The other two candidates are Senor Francisco Manrique, a conservative, and Senor Juan Carlos Coral, of the Worker's Socialist Party. General Peron has remained in the capital during the election campaign, and has made few public appearances. His wife, Isabel, who is standing for the vice presidency, has been touring the country, but reports say Peronists re unhappy about her nomination, and prospect of Senora Peron, a former dancer, succeeding her husband as President.

Buenos Aires is still pre-occupied with last week's coup in Chile, and the election campaign is low-key. Posters depicting the late President Allende pre-dominate in the capital. Some doubts have been aired about the President's health. He recently admitted to some heart trouble, and doctors have warned his not to over-exert himself.
