Background: In a battle of World Cup giants, Brazil today (Sunday) conquered current cup holders England by a single second half goal. The South Americans, twice winners of the cup, had to survive a fierce English counter-offensive during the last half-hour in Guadalajara's sun-trap Jalisco Stadium.
The clinching goal was worthy of a great tactical battle, in which Brazil's brilliant forwards Pele, Tostao, Rivelino and Jair sought to carve a way through the superbly drilled England defence.
Fifteen minutes after the Interval, Tostao gained possession in the England penalty area, flicked the ball across the goalmouth to Pele. The ace Brazilian goalscorer pulled the ball down to Jair, who crashed a shot past the diving goalkeeper Banks.
Honours were evenly divided between the two sides during the first half. Banks brought off a nearly miraculous save when he dived to scoop a Pele header round the upright. At the other end, Lee had a splendid chance to head England into the lead.
After Brazil's goal, England sent on attackers Bell and Astle as substitutes, and for 30 minutes the Brazilian defence back-pedalled as England strove for the equaliser. Astle was guilty of missing an open goal and immediately afterwards a superb shot by Bell Shaved the crossbar.
