  • Description

The Iraqi Ambassador to Lebanon escaped an assassination attempt in Beirut on Monday (13 August). An Iraqi embassy spokesman said the Ambassador. Abdul-Hussein Muslim, was slightly wounded when his car came under fire in the mainly Moslem west side of Beirut.

SYNOPSIS: Security forces said the vehicle the Ambassador was riding in appeared to have been hit by a rifle -- propelled grenade and several heavy machinegun bullets. They said the fact that the Ambassador had been sitting in the front of the car with the driver, instead of in the rear as usual, had probably saved his life. No-one has claimed responsibility for the attack, however Arab diplomatic sources told Reuters that the explosions may have been the work of Iraqi communists.

Ambassador Muslim was taken to Beirut General Hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries. Among the visitors to the hospital was Lebanese Prime Minister Al-Hoss. The attack is the latest in a series of attacks on Iraqi interests. Last week there were bomb blasts at the Iraqi commercial centre, and at the Iraqi Airways office, both in Beirut. No-one claimed responsibility for those attacks either.

The possibility of Palestinian involvement in the attack on the Ambassador was raised in a bitter anti-Iraqi speech by a guerrilla leader in Beirut on Sunday (12 August). The Ambassador himself claimed in an interview that enemies of the revolution, agents of imperialism and reactionaries were behind the assassination attempt.
