• Short Summary

ST. TROPEZ, IN THE SOUTH OF FRANCE, LONG ONE OF THE MOST FREQUENTED AND FRANTIC?

  • Description

ST. TROPEZ, IN THE SOUTH OF FRANCE, LONG ONE OF THE MOST FREQUENTED AND FRANTIC HAUNTS OF THE RICH AND FAMOUS NOW HAS A COMPETITOR ON ITS OWN DOORSTEP. PORT GRIMAUD OFFERS THE ONE THING ST. TROPEZ - 3 MILES (6 KM.) AWAY - CAN NO LONGER PROVIDE, EVEN FOR THE RICH: PEACE.

AT THE FAR END OF THE BAY OF ST. TROPEZ, PORT GRIMAUD LOOKS AS THOUGH IT HAS BEEN THERE FOR CENTURIES. THE HOUSES SIT SNUGLY ROUND THE COAST, THEIR MELLOW LINES REFLECTED IN THE WATER OF THE INLETS WHICH SURROUND AND DIVIDE THEM. BRICKS AND TILES HAVE THE LOOK OF AGE AND VINTAGE CRAFTSMANSHIP.

BUT THE LAND ON WHICH PORT GRIMAUD STANDS WAS MARSH ONLY SEVEN YEARS AGO. THE HOUSES ARE ALL NEW, THE CITY, AS ITS INHABITANTS LIKE TO CALL IT, IS STILL GROWING, ON STILTS.

PORT GRIMAUD IS, IN FACT, A MODERN VERSION OF ONE OF MAN'S OLDEST DWELLING PLACES - THE LAKE SETTLEMENT CONSTRUCTED ON PILES ACTUALLY ON THE WATER. IT IS THE REALISATION OF THE BOYHOOD DREAM OF ARCHITECT FRANCOIS SPOERRY, WHO GOT HIS INSPIRATION FROM VILLAGES BUILT LONG AGO ON THE LAKES OF SWITZERLAND.

A YACHTSMAN HIMSELF, SPOERRY SAW THE WATERBORNE CITY AS AN IDEAL LOCATION TO DEVELOP SEA SPORTS IN FRANCE, AND ALSO A PLACE WHERE THE FRENCH COULD INDULGE THEIR TASTE FOR HOUSES OF INDIVIDUAL DESIGN. BUT THE CITY WAS TO BLEND INTO ITS LANDSCAPE, ITS ARCHITECTURE SHOULD NOT BE GLARINGLY MODERN, BUT SHOULD REFLECT THE BEST OF THE PAST.

AND SO IT DOES. THE MOST MODERN METHODS OF ENGINEERING WERE USED TO DRAIN THE MARSHES, AND LAY THE FOUNDATIONS, BUT ALL THE HOUSES ARE BUILT OF THE MATERIALS, AND AS FAR AS POSSIBLE, BY THE METHODS OF THE EIGHTEENTH CENTURY. SO FAR 500 HOUSES HAVE BEEN COMPLETED, EACH WITH ITS OWN QUAY, ANOTHER THOUSAND ARE PLANNED, WITH TENNIS, GOLF, AND RIDING CLOSE AT HAND, AND A SAILING SCHOOL IN THE PORT ITSELF.

IT ALL SOUNDS RATHER LIKE PARADISE FOR THE INHABITANTS, BUT SO, NOT SO MANY YEARS AGO, DID ST. TROPEZ. POPULARITY MAY SOON SEND THE PEACE-SEEKERS SEARCHING ONCE MORE.
