  • Description

ABOUT TWO HUNDRED CHANTING STUDENTS CLASHED WITH POLICE IN CASTELLANA AVENUE -- MADRID'S MAIN STREET -- DURING A DEMONSTRATION TODAY IN PROTEST AGAINST LEGAL ACTION BEING TAKEN AGAINST OTHER STUDENTS.

THE STUDENTS WERE PROTESTING AGAINST COURT ACTION BEING TAKEN AGAINST SOME OF THEIR COLLEAGUES INVOLVED IN JANUARY'S DEMONSTRATIONS WHEN STUDENTS FOUGHT POLICE AT MADRID UNIVERSITY. TODAY, STUDENTS WENT TO THE COURTS OF JUSTICE, BUT FOUND THEM RINGED WITH POLICE.

SOME TWO HUNDRED OF THEM THEN MARCHED TO THE CASTELLANA, CHANTING "DEMOCRACY, YES -- DICTATORSHIP, NO." THEY STOPPED CARS AND BANGED ON THE WINDOWS AND CAUSED A MAJOR TRAFFIC JAM IN MADRID'S MAIN THOROUGHFARE. ANGRY MOTORISTS CONTRIBUTED TO THE CONFUSION BY CONTINUALLY SOUNDING THEIR HORNS.

SECURITY POLICE TAILED THE STUDENTS AND EVENTUALLY SQUADS OF POLICE CONVERGED ON THE STUDENTS AND DISPERSED THEM.
