  • Description

To speed the mail post office headquarters in the historic cathedral city of Norwich now operate an experimental 'robot' machine that sorts letters by a complex code system - claimed to be the world's first.

All the sender has to do is address his mail the usual way, but foot the address with four code letters and two figures - the pre-arranged code indicating a precise location.

The sorter has now only to sit at a keyboard on the automatic sorting machine, tapping out the codes written on the envelopes, and the 'robot' distributes the mail into the pigeon hole for the appropriate delivery postman. If the experiment is successful the use of postal codes will be extended to other cities.
