  • Description

The Leipzig International Spring Fair, a key market for East-West trade contacts, opened yesterday (5 March) with considerable stress on cooperation between the capitalist and communist worlds.

More than 10,000 firms from 70 countries are exhibiting at the fair, which was opened on March 4th by Dr. Julius Balkow, one of the deputy premiers of East Germany. He made a point of underlining in his opening speech his country's good relations with the Arab nations, particularly the United Arab Republic. Relations with Syria and Iraq had developed favourably, as had trade with India, Ceylon, Morocco, Burma, and Guinea. He held high hopes of expanding favourable relations with Brazil, Colombia, Chile, and Algeria.

At least 300 British companies are represented at the Leipzig fair. However, a notable absentee is China - at the Autumn Leipzig fair, the East Germans closed down the Chinese stand before the show was fully opened to the public after the Chinese refused to withdraw anti-Soviet literature.

France and Germany too are well represented, as is Russia with a large display to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the October revolution.

The exhibition lays great stress upon technical trade; electronics and electrical engineering, machine engineering and the chemical industry are all strongly featured.

Among the first visitors was East German First Secretary of the Socialist Unity Party, Walter Ulbricht, who toured the exhibition with his wife, and several leading representatives of the GDR. It will continue for ten days.
