  • Description

Cuba's Prime Minister Fidel Castro stopped over briefly in Algeria on Monday (1 March) on his way to Libya for talks.

SYNOPSIS: He was greeted at Algiers airport by President Houari Boumedienne and other Algerian officials. Strict secrecy surrounded Dr. Castro's visit. In Cuba's capital of Havana, the Cuba News Agency Prensa Latina announced his departure only after he had landed in Algiers. The secrecy is part of the tight security which surrounds the Cuban leader's rare foreign trips.

Relations between Algeria and Cuba were strained until recent years. Dr. Castro had made hostile remarks when President Boumedienne came to power in 1965, but, after 1969, the two countries exchanges delegations regularly.

After reviewing a guard of honour, Dr. Castro boarded his aircraft to fly on to Libya. Few details were released about the visit, but it's thought he'll be staying there for about ten days. During that time he's to have talks with the leader of the Revolutionary Command Council, Muammar Gaddafi.
