  • Description

Three days of ceremonies to celebrate the recent Anglo-American withdrawal from military bases in Libya, ended in Tripoli on June 22 with a mass rally at which Libya's leader Muammar Gaddafi played host to the leaders of seven Arab nations, including the front line four in the struggle with Israel, Syria, Jordan and Egypt.

Colonel Gaddafi called on all the Arab nations to join the battle against Israel, asking for full mobilisation, the massing of Arab resources, and their actual participation in the battle.

President Nasser told the crowd his country was undeterred by the massive Israeli air strikes on its Suez canal positions in the past month, and was moving towards the stage of liberation.

"Israel is trying to get us to accept her terms, or face up to continuing raids." he said.

He added that this was not a regional battle, but one for the Arab Nation as a whole.

Coinciding with the celebrations were closed-door summit meetings of the Arab leaders, which wound up on June 23 after discussion of a message from Fatah commando organisation leader Yasser Arafat.

Details of the talks were not disclosed but it is understood that an Arafat warning was discussed that there could be new trouble in Jordan if the position of Palestinian commandos there was not clarified.

On June 25, Egyptian and Syrian leaders, President Nasser and Dr. Nureddin El-Astassi, flew into Benghazi in Eastern Libya to be welcomed by almost the entire population of the city.

The two Arab leaders were to address a mass rally in Benghazi as part of the evacuation celebrations.

The speeches are expected to throw some additional light on the unofficial two-day summit talks of the Arab nations.
