  • Description

With the majority of Britain's newspaper agreeing on a Labour victory in Thursday's (June 18) general elections, major interest now seems to rest on the outcome of the fight for the seat of Wolverhampton where Enoch Powell is seeking re-election. Mr. Powell has made the headlines over the past week with speeches on his pet subject..... the repatriation of Britain's immigrants. There have also been reports that Mr. Powell will seek a confrontation with Conservative leader Edward Heath over leadership of the party if it losses the coming election. During recent speeches, Mr. Powell has put forward his conviction that "enemies" of the country have infiltrated Government departments, and conspired to produce underestimated figures of Britain's coloured population and growth rate.

Mr. Powell represents the Midland's town of Wolverhampton, an one of the highest immigrant densities in Britain. Mr. Powell will be fighting for his political life on June 18. If the Tories lose, much of the blame may be laid on him during the post mortem.

On the other side of the coin is Labour candidate Doctor David Pitt. He is a 56-year-old West Indian, who's lived in England since 1947. Doctor Pitt takes the other extreme to Mr. Powell. His main object is to see immigrants happily integrated in Britain and he believes that improved housing will bring this about.

Mr. Wilson and Mr. Heath gave been reluctant to bring the racial question into the elections and both say it is not an important issue. But Mr. Powell feels otherwise and with election day drawing near has made it the main topic of his speeches. Doctor Pitt, Probably following party directives, rarely speaks on the subject, but if drawn into it usually manages to bring the issue into the context of another, such as housing.
