  • Description

Mexico's President Luis Echeverria arrived in Rome on Saturday (9 November) to attend the World Food Conference.

President Echeverria is due to speak at the conference organised by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) on Monday. He is expected to press his proposal for a world food bank.

President Echeverria suggested that the bank be run jointly by the United Nations and the FAO to provide foodstuffs and cash for famine-stricken countries.

The Mexican President has a special interest in food problems as his country is among many Latin American countries now suffering from food shortages.

Reports said about 70 per cent of Mexico's 54 million people are living under subsistence level -- it is estimated that up to thirty per cent of them are starving. While in Rome, he will meet Italian President Giovanni Leone. He was met at the airport by Italy's Minister of Defence, Giulio Andreotti.
