    A BOAC JETLINER CRASHED IN FLAMES YESTERDAY (SATURDAY) AT THE FOOT OF SNOW-CAPPED MOUNT FUJI IN JAPAN, 50 MILES FROM TOKYO, KILLING ALL 124 PEOPLE ON BOARD. A HUGE SQUAD OF 850 SOLDIERS AND POLICE IMMEDIATELY BEGAN SIFTING THROUGH THE WRECKAGE SEEKING CLUES TO THE CAUSE OF THE CRASH.

    THE JETLINER WAS ON A ROUND-THE-WORLD FLIGHT FROM SAN FRANCISCO. IT CRASHED AFTER TAKING OFF FROM TOKYO AIRPORT FOR HONG KONG. THE CRASH CAME ONLY 18 HOURS AFTER A CANADIAN PACIFIC AIRLINERS DC-8 WAS WRECKED LANDING AT TOKYO AIRPORT WITH THE LOSS OF 64 LIVES. IT WAS THE THIRD BIG CRASH IN THE TOKYO AREA IN A MONTH.

    SOME EYE-WITNESSES SAID THE BOAC BOEING 707 EXPLODED IN MID-AIR. WRECKAGE FROM THE BLAZING JETT HURTLED DOWN OVER A WIDE AREA, SOME OF IT FALLING ON GOTEMBA CITY, 12 MILES AWAY.

    BRITISH OVERSEAS AIRWAYS CORPORATION CHAIRMAN, SIR GILES GUTHRIE, FLEW IMMEDIATELY TO JAPAN TO FIND OUT WHY THE AIRCRAFT CRASHED.
