  • Description

Egyptian President Anwar Sadat held talks with Palestinian commando leader Yasser Arafat last week (April 13) in Cairo, where earlier in the week members of the Palestinian National Council and Congress had met in conference.

The Palestinian leaders had spent several days in the Egyptian capital discussing ways to merge all Arab commando movements into a single force, patterned after the Viet Cong in South Vietnam. Mr. Arafat is presently the head of Fatah, the largest of the Palestinian commando groups.

The Palestinian delegates also took a tough line against the recent proposal by King Hussein for a federated state of Jordan, a plan which has also been criticised by President Sadat.

SYNOPSIS: At the end of several days of discussions in Cairo last week, Palestinian leaders, including commando leader Yasser Arafat, met with Egyptian President Sadat.

Among the topics discussed during meetings of the Palestinian National Council and Congress were the unification of the Palestinian guerrilla movement against Israel and condemnation of King Hussein's proposal for a united Jordan.

Mr. Arafat, who now heads the largest commando movement, is considered a possible choice to head the proposed unified command. Recently, both President Sadat and Mr. Arafat have come out against King Hussein's plans for Jordan. During the Palestinian conference, there was talk of trying the King on charges of conspiracy against the Palestinian people.
