  • Description

An Argentine electoral tribunal on Wednesday (26 January) recognised as "legal" the political party led by ex-President Juan Domingo Peron exiled in Madrid. The party had been illegal and clandestine, since Peron's overthrow in 1955 after a nine-year rule.

The movement is called the Justicialist Party, because laws governing elections planned by the military government for a return to civilian rule in mid-1973 prohibit use of a leader's name for a party title.

A week before the electoral tribunal's decision, however, Interior Minister Arturo Mor Roig announced that Peron would not be an acceptable candidate in next year's elections. Almost simultaneously, Peron issued what was tantamount to a call to arms in the Peronist journal Las Bases.

Observers are speculating that the situation could be developing the way in which the government of President Lanusse may wish with the people being forced to choose between probable stability with Lanusse, and uncertainty with Peron. One immediate consequence of the deterioration in relations between the government and Peron has been a resurgence in Peronist and anti-Peronist guerrilla activity.
