  • Description

In North-east Thailand, the people greet the onset of the cool season by rounding up elephants. The event can be traced back to ancient traditions, but these days it is more of a tourist attraction.

For two days at Surin, 7 miles (432 km) north-east of Bangkok, the elephants - as well as dancers - perform various tricks and antics for the benefit of tourists and the local population.

This year 146 elephants took part in the round-up. Among them were 16 which earlier this year drew even bigger crowds at Expo 70 in Japan.

The biggest attraction was the tug-of-war between 80 of Thailand's strongest soldiers and the champion elephant by the name of Booma. As always, Booma won with plenty of energy to spare.
