Background: An international symposium to study and discuss the aftermath of the 1973 Arab-Israeli October War, opened in Cairo, Egypt, on Tuesday (28 October).

Six hundred military and technical experts from several countries including most of the Arab states, the United States, France and India attended the symposium.

They will analyze the military, economic, political and scientific developments of Arab countries since the war.

The meeting was opened by Egyptian Vice-President Hosny Mobarek and Egypt's Minister of War, General Mohammed El-Gamassi made the first major address.

General El-Gamassi said that the October war had erased charges that Arabs were unable to make any progress against Israeli forces.

General El-Gamassi was head of the Egyptian military delegation at 'Kilometre 101' in the Suez during the talks with Israel on dis-engagement after the '73 war.

During the symposium's opening session one senior Egyptian officer credited film star Charlie Chaplin with inspiring the Egyptian push across the Suez Canal at the start of the war.

Brigadier Mohammed Zuhdi said that when preparing for the war, Egypt had fruitlessly experimented with more than 300 methods of overcoming Israeli sand barriers on the East bank of the canal.

But on army officer, he said, had seen Chaplin's film "The Gold Rush" and suggested they adopt the comic's method of using water hoses to break up sand bag barriers. The idea was successfully adopted.
