  • Description

President Thieu of South Vietnam inaugurated his new Democratic Party on Thursday (29 March). Until now, the President ruled without a formal party.

The new Democratic Party developed from the organisation which has helped the President. It was inaugurated at a rally in a packed Saigon stadium. The rally was organised on military lines, and climaxed with the release of red smoke and balloons. The Resident took part in a motorcade, and observers noted he is making more frequent public appearance since the war ended.

SYNOPSIS: Thousands of people crowded into a stadium in the Saigon suburb of Cholon on Thursday. They were there for one of the most significant ceremonies since the end of the war.

President Nguyen van Thieu was officially inaugurating his new political party. Throughout the war, Thieu ruled without an official party behind him. Now he has given his wartime organisation formal status.

President Thieu toured the stadium so that all could see him. He has been making many more public appearances since the war ended.

The new party has been named the Democratic Party, and its launching rally was managed with almost military precision.

The launching of President Thieu's party may be an attempt to solidify his position in Vietnam.
