  • Description

Britain's new Governor of Kenya Sir Patrick Renison flew into Nairobi Oct 23 from London are the same day was sworn in. The ceremony took ten minutes. Chief Justice Sir Ronald Sinclair administered the oath.

Sir Patrick - replacing the Governor for seven years Sir Evelyn Baring - told reporters at the airport: The British Government's attitude to Kenya is multi-racial.

At Government House, before the swearing in ceremony, he answered Press questions after giving the reminder he was a beginner in Africa. He said there would be no general election in Kenya before next year's constitutional conference.

Referring to African nationalism he said he had 12 year's experience of nationalism in the Caribbean area and thought there would be resemblances between nationalism there, its intentions and methods, and nationalism in Africa and other parts of the world.

In a message to the peoples of Kenya he said his appointment was a challenge "since Africa offers the biggest question facing my service." Over the radio the same day, Sir Patrick said the colony was a "sort of show window of the Commonwealth where, I pray, we can show to the world a working model of the inter-racial partnership which stands so high among the purposes of the Commonwealth."
