  • Description

ABOUT 3-HUNDRED DEMONSTRATORS WERE REPULSED BY STRONG FORCES OF POLICE TONIGHT AS THEY TRIED TO BREAK INTO CLARIDGES HOTEL IN LONDON WHERE U.S. PRESIDENT NIXON IS SPENDING THE NIGHT. FORCED AWAY FROM THE HOTEL BY POLICE, THE DEMONSTRATORS STARTED A FIRE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD, AND A NUMBER OF ARREST WERE MADE.

SEVERAL HUNDREDS POLICE WERE GUARDING THE HOTEL, AND IN THE SCUFFLES A NUMBER OF DEMONSTRATORS AND POLICE OFFICERS WERE INJURED.

OVER THE FIRE STARTED BY THE PROTESTORS, CALLING FOR THE AMERICAN PRESIDENT TO "GO HOME", ONE MAN ROASTED A PIECE OF MEAT WHICH HE SAID REPRESENTED MR. NIXON. WHEN FIREMEN ARRIVED TO DOUSE THE BLAZE, DEMONSTRATORS HURLED COINS AT THEM SHOUTING "MORE PAY FOR THE FIREMEN".

UNABLE TO BREAK THROUGH THE SIX-DEEP CORDON OF POLICE, THE DEMONSTRATORS RAMPAGED THROUGH NEARBY STREETS, OTHERS CHANTED AND JEERED AT EACH CAR THAT ARRIVED AT THE HOTEL -- BUT MAINLY AT THE WRONG CARS, MOST OF WHICH WERE ARRIVING FOR A RECEPTION BEING HELD THERE FOR THE PREMIERE OF THE FILM "THE PRIME OF MISS JEAN BROSIS".
