  • Description

THE CITY OF CASABLANCA, IN MOROCCO, HAS RETURNED TO OUTWARD CALM FOLLOWING THE VIOLENT RIOTING LAST TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY IN WHICH SEVEN PEOPLE WERE KILLED AND ABOUT 200 INJURED. SO FAR ABOUT 310 OF THE RIOTERS ARRESTED HAVE BEEN SENT TO GAOL BY CASABLANCA AND RABAT COURTS FOR TERMS OF UP TO TWO YEARS.

THE RIOTING STARTED FROM A STUDENT DEMONSTRATION AGAINST THE GOVERNMENT'S REDUCTION OF THE EDUCATION BUDGET BY 10 PER CENT AND THE LIMITING OF ADMISSION TO INSTITUTIONS OF HIGHER EDUCATION. HOWEVER, THE INFORMATION MINISTRY BLAMES FOREIGN INSTIGATORS FOR THE RIOTING.

MANY SHOPS IN CASABLANCA STILL HAD THEIR WINDOWS BOARDED UP TODAY (SATURDAY) AFTER BEING LOOTED BY HUNDREDS OF RAMPAGING YOUTHS ON THE FIRST DAY OF THE RIOTING, WHEN THE SEVEN DEATHS OCCURRED. THE YOUTHS ALSO BURNED VEHICLES, AND ATTACKED SCHOOLS, POST OFFICES, AND A BANK, A RAILWAY STATION, AND EVEN TRIED TO FREE PRISONERS AT A GAOL.

THE RIOTERS ALSO CAUSED CONSIDERABLE DAMAGE TO SERVICES, INCLUDING TELEPHONE AND POWER LINES, STREET LIGHTING AND TRAFFIC SIGNS. OFFICIALS SAID SECURITY FORCES "INTERVENED ENERGETICALLY" TO BREAK UP FURTHER RIOTING THE FOLLOWING DAY, AND CONTINUED THEIR PATROLS TO PREVENT FURTHER RIOTS.

(IN PARIS TODAY - SATURDAY - NEARLY 200 MOROCCAN STUDENTS STAGED A PEACEFUL DEMONSTRATION OUTSIDE THE MOROCCAN CONSULATE AGAINST WHAT THEY DESCRIBED AS "THE FASCIST AND ANTI-POPULAR REGIME" IN MOROCCO.)
